How Low Should You Go? The Rule For Hanging Decor.

Hanging decor adds an element of unexpected fascination to the details of any event. On your party night, the eyes are going to be on you and other guests, your gorgeous new decor and all the details you have created to make it feel cohesive.

But, hey! Hey! Hey! Let's give guests a reason to look up with an amazing easy to install chandelier. And trust me, any suspended flower centerpiece (even the one you thought was the worst one ever) adds an unexpected touch of whimsy.

Hanging decor is impactful. And sure to wow! 

As a long time botanic enthusiast, I love a good well-installed plant or floral install. There's no doubt, it adds a touch of elegance and creates magical photo opportunity. But, the truth is you have to hang it right. And, that means mechanics for the right height is important. 

I have created lots of DIY and How-To directions. This type of decor and work can be overwhelming but it is always worth it whether it is an event for a corporate branding project or a luxury wedding. Remember it doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful. It's going to be fine! Take lots of pictures and share them using #CHOF or @colonialhouseofflowers.

With measuring tape, yardsticks and sharp-shooter squinting eyes it seems like we’re always stepping back from an installation to ask, how high should it be. Or how low, for that matter? Hey! Just simply where should the bottom fall??

“Come on. Can you step over here and give it a look-see,” we ask. “Yes. You. And, you. And, you, too,” we plead.

Well, it’s official. We’ve discovered the answer. So-totally fortunate to have my husband Brian of redbpower (electrical contracting), as a member of a recent wedding installation team, they told us the golden rule. And, this crew hangs chandeliers every single day.

Here’s the answer: the bottom of your lighting should hang at least 30-inches above your tabletop so it doesn’t block the view of any extra-tall friends or family.

Apparently Pottery Barn agrees, “the general rule for hanging dining room chandeliers is that the bottom of the fixture should hang between 30″ and 36″ from the tabletop assuming you have an 8′ ceiling.”
