The festive season is upon us and in full gusto. Yes, I know you know! We know! Right? Chances are you've been busy getting your porch and yard decorations ready for the outdoors, finding the best Christmas tree ornaments and maybe making your own wreath. But, there's one more Christmas decorating task that's easy and great--- dressing up your mantel!

Since Christmas is officially here. Amid the shopping, partying and decorating bustle it's important to stop, step back and enjoy the season. Notice the traditions of your family and friends. Now is the time to take-it-in, authentically. It isn't a secret that I love mantels. One reason is that I feel the hearth is one the most meaningful places in the home. I believe it's more symbolic this time of year so decorating it is folklore that I intentionally keep on my list.

I am known to encourage people to dress up the fireplace in home weddings and events. There's something special about the hearth. During this season it's even more special because this is where families gather to watch holiday movies, sip hot chocolate and cuddle with the family pet. I have vivid memories of my Grandmother's fireplace decorated for Christmas. Plus, this is where Santa comes down to visit us every year.l. In my opinion, this is a magical place that we can go all out when it comes to decorating, one layer at a time.

When dreaming up layers throw in all your personality. This is the time to embrace boldness. This is not the time for modesty. It is easy to be creative in this space if you take it one layer at a time. Don't be shy! Start with tall Christmas trees, pine cones or candle sticks then add a another layer of something with more variation in shape and size like houses, or fruit. Then, hang garland, a wreath if you will use one... and remember hang the stockings for old Saint Nick!

Now that those things are done you can add another layer. You know, I do love layers. Layer simplify things so it's not an overwhelming task. Work on one layer at at time. Add a sleigh or oversized jingle bells or wrapped presents around the tree and the fireplace. Speaking of pretty presents, if you're looking for a place to use fancy paper and ribbon this is it because (shhh!) the boxes can be empty and used as seasonal props every year.

SURPRISE… color has to be one of all time favorite things to add to a space. The possibilities are endless when you have a white wall and white mantel. When this is the case you may especially outrageous with color selections. Bright colors, bold textures and fun patterns can be layered in here withe everything from felt garlands as shown here, or stockings or wreaths, or bottle brush holiday tees. I love the added sleigh and reindeer and even the unexpected wreath on the sled. Who would have thought to put it there?
