  • Rabbiteye blueberry variety
  • Perfect for the Southeastern US
  • Cold Hardy blueberry
  • Blueberries ready to eat in June!

Big is definitely better when it comes to the Brightwell Blueberry Bush (Vaccinium 'Brightwell'). This is a classic Rabbiteye native to the southeast and southern states. Today, the Rabbiteye blues are the most sought-after varieties for the low chill regions throughout the United States.

Widely grown commercially, and perfect for your home garden and plant gifting. Brightwell gives you loads of large blueberries that are packed full of juicy goodness. Your friends and family will be thrilled to know that there are far more berries than you can use. Brightwell has reports of up to 10 pounds plus of fruit from one plant!

Brightwell is also unaffected by late winter or early spring freezes better than most other varieties. Pollinators galore arrive for the lovely pink blushed white bell-shaped blossoms each spring. Brightwell is self-fruiting, so it doesn't require a pollinator to set fruit, but you will always get bigger yields if you plant it with other Rabbiteyes.

Rabbiteye blueberries perform well in Atlanta, Georgia and the the Southern US due to their ability to withstand high heat and tolerate drought. The blueberries are highly productive and grow vigorously while also being adaptable to most conditions.

A 1983, University of Georgia release, Brightwell Rabbiteye is named after esteemed UGA blueberry developer, Dr. James Brightwell, and is considered by many among the top varieties in the world! Best known for its reliability and its long, sustained harvest period (~ 35 days), Brightwell is ideal for almost any planting application. It has very vigorous, upright growth - and because it flowers late, it is highly resistant to freeze damage. Brightwell is a heavy producer of medium size berries, with excellent flavor, and dry stem scar. It is also known for its very firm, uniformly round berries - a favorite for mechanical harvesting/commercial processing.
NOTE: All of our fruit plants are grown in containers outdoors so they are fully rooted and landscape-ready upon arrival.
Blueberry Plant Growing Tips
Blueberry plants grow best in an acidic (pH of 4.8 to 5.2), organically rich, moist, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. The more sun the better for best berry production. The shallow, fibrous roots of blueberry plants like a consistently moist but well-drained soil which can be provided by with a layer of organic mulch.
Although blueberries are self-fertile, cross-pollination produces the best fruit crop (larger berries and larger yields). Therefore, it is best to plant more than one variety that will bloom at the same time. Blueberry season can be extended by planting early, mid-season and late varieties. Make sure to plant two different cultivars/varieties for each season.

Blueberry Bush Landscape Ideas
Blueberry bushes make a great addition to any landscaping. They can be used as a hedge, put into a mass planting with multiple varieties, or even used as a specimen plant. As long as their basic needs are met, blueberries will thrive wherever you decide to add them to your landscape. These bushes look great when they are planted 5 feet apart in a row.
